Museum/Heritage site Attendant Job Description

Background

 L’Acadie de Chezzetcook is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and sharing the rich Acadian heritage of the West Chezzetcook and Grand DĂ©sert region. Located just 20 minutes from Dartmouth along the picturesque Eastern Shore, our Centre includes a museum, heritage barn, and interpretive programming that bring Acadian history to life.

The site is undergoing exciting revitalization, aiming to become a vibrant hub for cultural tourism, community events, and educational experiences. The Museum/Heritage site Attendant will support daily visitor operations and help animate the site through guided tours, interactive demonstrations, and heritage interpretation in both French and English. A great way to practice both languages speaking skills during the summer. 

This is an ideal opportunity for students interested in history, tourism, language, community development, and storytelling. Join a passionate team working to ensure Acadian culture thrives for generations to come.

Main Duties: 

  1. Welcome visitors and provide information about the site, exhibitions, and activities.

  2. Deliver guided tours of the museum and heritage site, adapting to school groups, tourists, and community visitors.

  3. Assist with the development and delivery of interactive heritage programming (e.g. traditional cooking, crafts, gardening, music, etc.).

  4. Support visitor experience in the gift shop and exhibit spaces.
    Assist with special events and seasonal activities.

  5. Help create bilingual social media and promotional content.

  6. Maintain cleanliness and safety of public areas, assist with light site upkeep.

Specific Skills and Abilities

  • Bilingual preferred (oral English and French)

  • Experience with or interest in cultural interpretation, teaching, or performance is an asset.

  • Comfortable working outdoors, in rustic buildings, and with light manual tasks.

  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with social media platforms.

  • Experience working with children, seniors, or tourists is an asset.

  • Valid driver’s license is an asset.

General Requirements

  • Wear period-inspired or traditional Acadian clothing (provided or supported).

  • Work weekends and holidays as needed; some evening events possible.

  • Participate in orientation and training on Acadian history and local traditions.

  • Please note: The minimum age for applicants is 15 years old.

Terms of Employment

  • Three positions available:

    • Two positions for 8 weeks, starting late June - early July

    • One position for 10 to 12 weeks, starting mid to late June

  • Full-time (35 hours/week), $15.70/hour + 4% vacation pay
